Project for the Establishment of a Caucasian red deer Breeding Facility

At the initiative of the National Wildlife Agency, a project was developed to establish a breeding facility for the Caucasian red deer (Cervus elaphus maral), a species listed in Georgia’s Red List, within Algeti National Park. Based on this project, in 2024, a breeding facility for Eurasian red deer species was established in the park, and the area was fenced. In 2025, the introduction of deer into the facility is planned.

The Caucasian red deer is the only subspecies at risk of extinction, primarily due to decades of poaching. To support its recovery, a wild population will be reintroduced within Algeti National Park’s vast 8,000-hectare territory, facilitating its geographic connection with other existing populations.
