Deputy Head of the National Agency of Wildlife, Giorgi Metreveli, together with agency specialists, participated in the stocking process.
The restoration and breeding of vulnerable species within Georgia’s biodiversity is one of the primary areas of activity for the National Agency of Wildlife under the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture.
The Agency has been implementing the brown trout restoration project since 2016. At its modern breeding facility, specialists produce more than half a million trout eggs annually. Placing fertilized eggs directly into rivers is a globally tested method that significantly increases the chances of natural hatching.
Importantly, the project also includes a monitoring component. Studies conducted to date confirm that the species is successfully reproducing in the wild.
Brown trout, also known as river trout, has been included in Georgia’s Red List since 2006 and is classified as Vulnerable.
