The rivers of Upper Imereti were supplemented with brown trout eggs
Red-Listed Brook Trout Population Restoration Project
Organized by the National Wildlife Agency with the involvement of specialists, 20,000 fertilized eggs of the Red List species — brown trout (Salmo trutta) — were introduced into suitable headwater habitats of rivers within the Kvereti Protected Area in Upper Imereti.
The fertilized trout eggs, released at the eyed stage, are placed in tributaries of various mountain rivers across Georgia, where they complete the final phase of incubation under natural conditions.
The placement of fertilized brown trout eggs in the wild supports the reproduction of this nationally protected Red List species and significantly increases the success rate of natural hatching.
The brown trout conservation and reproduction project has been implemented by the National Wildlife Agency of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture since 2016.
According to the 2025 action plan, river ecosystems across Georgia will be supplemented with a total of 700,000 fertilized trout eggs.
