Spawning Season Begins for the Red List Species-Brook Trout

Red-Listed Brook Trout Population Restoration Project

The spawning season has commenced at the Brook Trout (Salmo fario) hatchery of the National Wildlife Agency. With the involvement of the Agency’s specialists, the first batch of trout eggs has already been collected and placed in incubation units. The incubation period lasts from 60 to 90 days.

Once the fertilized eggs reach the “eyed” stage, they will be released into tributaries of mountain rivers across Georgia, where they will complete the final phase of incubation under natural conditions.

Releasing trout eggs and larvae into the wild is an effective method that supports the reproduction of this vulnerable species and enhances the natural hatching success rate.

The Brook Trout Reproduction Project for the Red List species has been implemented by the National Wildlife Agency under the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia since 2016.
