According to the latest monitoring conducted by the specialists of the National Wildlife Agency, the population of the Brown Trout – a species included in Georgia’s Red List – has significantly increased in the mountain rivers of the Samegrelo–Upper Svaneti region.
Recent data show that in rivers where, prior to 2022, the Brown Trout had almost disappeared, the population has now grown to about 50 individuals. The fish measure between 14 and 30 centimeters in length.
The stable growth of the Brown Trout population is the result of a project implemented by the National Wildlife Agency since 2016, which involves restocking rivers with trout eggs and subsequently monitoring the population.
The release of trout eggs and larvae of this Red List species into the wild is a method that supports the reproduction of this vulnerable species and maximizes the chances of natural hatching.
In 2024, rivers across Georgia were restocked with 140,000 trout eggs. According to the 2025 plan, a total of 700,000 trout eggs will be released into the rivers.
