60 000 River Trout Eggs Spawned in the Rivers of Lentekhi, Lower Svaneti
Red-Listed Brook Trout Population Restoration Project
The river trout (Salmo trutta fario) was added to Georgia’s Red List in 2006 and is classified as a vulnerable species. Since 2016, the National Wildlife Agency of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia has implemented a program to support its reproduction and conservation. This initiative aims to produce half a million juvenile fish annually and repopulate local rivers.
Stocking rivers with trout eggs and larvae is a proven method that enhances the reproduction of vulnerable species, maximizing their chances of hatching and survival in the wild. Similar approaches have been successfully applied in various European countries.
As part of this effort, 60,000 trout eggs were recently spawned in the rivers of Lentekhi, Lower Svaneti. The event was attended by Solomon Pavliashvili, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture; Revaz Bezhashvili, head of the national wildlife agency; Papuna Margveladze, State Representative of Racha-Lechkhumi and Lower Svaneti; and rangers from Racha National Park.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture prioritizes biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration, implementing significant projects to preserve Georgia’s natural heritage.
