90 000 Brook Trout Eggs from the "Red List" Species Spawned in the Alazani Tributaries
Red-Listed Brook Trout Population Restoration Project
As part of the Brook Trout Population Restoration Project, 90 000 brook trout eggs from the "Red List" species were spawned in the tributaries of the Alazani River within the Batsara-Babaneuri Protected Areas. This marks another significant step in restoring the species in this protected region.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, in collaboration with the Agency of Protected Areas and the National Wildlife Agency, has successfully implemented the brook trout breeding project since 2016. According to the 2025 plan, 700 000 eggs will be spawned in rivers across the country.
Representatives from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, the Agency of Protected Areas, the National Wildlife Agency, local municipalities, and city hall participated in the spawning process in the Alazani tributaries within the Batsara-Babaneuri Protected Areas.
"Significant measures are being taken to restore biodiversity in Georgia. Over the years, we have spawned millions of brook trout eggs into Georgian rivers. Alongside spawning efforts, active monitoring is underway. In many rivers where fish were previously scarce, brook trout are now visibly present. This process will be continuous and will continue in the coming years,"- said Karlo Amirgulashvili, Head of the Biodiversity and Forestry Department at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.
Spawning brook trout eggs and larvae into the wild is a method that supports the reproduction of this vulnerable species and maximizes the natural hatching process with minimal human intervention.
