Rivers Salesaviskhevi and Shromiskhevi in Lagodekhi Spawned with 60,000 Brook Trout Eggs
Red-Listed Brook Trout Population Restoration Project
In January 2024, as part of the brook trout population restoration initiative, the Salesaviskhevi and Shromiskhevi rivers in the Lagodekhi Protected Areas were spawned with 60,000 brook trout eggs. This effort aims to support the reproduction of the red-listed species and enhance the river ecosystem’s health.
The Brook Trout Population Restoration Project has been implemented by the National Agency of Wildlife since 2016, with annual trout spawning activities conducted in various rivers across Georgia. Releasing incubated trout eggs and larvae into the wild is a method that promotes the reproduction of vulnerable species while minimizing human intervention, increasing the percentage of natural hatching.
The eggs are artificially fertilized and then placed in river incubators, where they are arranged in calm water areas, creating optimal conditions for natural reproduction.
