Rivers in Dusheti Municipality Spawned with 30 000 Eggs of Red-Listed Brook Trout
Red-Listed Brook Trout Population Restoration Project
As part of the Red-Listed Brook Trout Population Restoration Project, rivers in the Aragvi Protected Landscape, located in Ukana Pshavi, Dusheti Municipality, have been spawned with 30,000 eggs of the brook trout, a species included in Georgia’s “Red List.”
Releasing brook trout eggs and larvae into the wild is a proven method that supports the reproduction of vulnerable species and maximizes the natural hatching process. This approach to species restoration has been successfully implemented in many countries worldwide.
"The conservation and restoration of biodiversity, as well as maintaining it in an ecologically intact condition, is one of the key priorities of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture. Together with relevant institutions, we conduct annual river spawning activities across the country. The brook trout stocking program will continue in Dusheti Municipality for the next two years," said Karlo Amirgulashvili, Head of the Biodiversity and Forestry Department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture.
The river spawning process was attended by the Mayor of Dusheti Municipality, Matsatso Narimanidze; Deputy Mayor, Otar Chkheidze; the Head of the Biodiversity and Forestry Department of the Ministry, Karlo Amirgulashvili; the Director of the Aragvi Protected Landscape, Nato Tskhvarashvili; and the Head of Pshav-Khevsureti National Park, Ushisha Tsiklauri, along with park staff.
It is worth noting that the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, in collaboration with relevant agencies, continues to implement large-scale river spawning activities across the country. The program in Dusheti Municipality will be extended for the next two years to further support the brook trout population.
